Statistical analysis of teenage meth users shows that the percentage of youth that become addicted to meth has not changed much in the last few years. However, experts warn that this information can be deceiving. Meth tends to spread in clusters within smaller groups rather than throughout the entire population which results in some areas getting devastated by teen meth addiction while other areas are completely meth free. Unfortunately, no one ever knows where it is going to show up until it is too late.
In Oregon, meth addiction is second only to marijuana and more prevalent than alcohol addiction among teens. Two teenagers in Nebraska that were high on meth ended up freezing to death in a snowstorm last January. Oregon and Nebraska are among 20 states that have high rates of teen meth addiction. The information released by the DEA early this year shows that the Western and Midwestern states currently have the highest percentages of teenagers who enter treatment centers for meth addiction.
In a confidential survey completed by students aged 13-18 last spring, the results show that teenagers are not aware of the horrifying reality of meth and addiction. 3.4% of teenagers report to have used meth at least once in the last year. Nearly 25% say that it would be easy for them to get meth if they tried and some believe that there are benefits from using meth. 2,500 students participated in this survey in 42 public, junior and senior high schools, and private schools nationwide.
In a different survey conducted by The Meth Project on teen meth addiction, nearly 25% of teenagers said that it would be “very easy” or “easy” to get methamphetamine if they wanted. Also, about 33% of teenagers say that there is “no risk” or only “slight risk” in trying meth a few times. The Meth Project is a anti-drug nonprofit movement that has introduced informational advertisements to help teens become aware of the real dangers of meth addiction. Also in this study, 25% of teens say that meth use can be beneficial and 24% answered that meth will help you lose weight and another 22% said that meth will make you happy and feel good.
Government representatives and lawmakers agree that this survey regarding teen meth addiction makes clear the fact that a much more assertive drug awareness program needs to be put in place to make sure that teenagers know about the real danger and destruction that meth brings.
Another survey on teen meth addiction portrays that nearly 36% of teens believe that there is not much risk in trying meth. This definitely needs to change since a teen, or anyone, can easily become addicted to meth in just a single try. Meth is more than three times as powerful than cocaine and is and is very dangerous. These survey's are all very startling, please talk to your teenager about the dangers of meth.
